Why I Started Fix Up Fleet

Fix Up Fleet started with two things: cheap cars and the need to keep them running.
Early in my career, I worked as a journalist. The hours were long, the pay was awful, and eventually I burned out on writing for a living. I moved into the public sector, where my day job now involves working on websites. It’s steadier work, and it gave me space to rediscover writing on my own terms.

Since then, the shop has never been empty. I’ve imported a Honda Acty kei truck from Japan, kept an aging Lexus on the road, and cycled through a couple of newer daily drivers. The fleet is always in flux — buy a car, fix it, drive it, repeat — and that cycle became the inspiration behind the name Fix Up Fleet.

Why “Fix Up Fleet”?

An International Loadstar dump truck parked next to a Honda Acty kei truck.

For most people, a “fleet” means company trucks or delivery vans. For me, it’s just the revolving cast of cars and trucks that cycle through my shop and driveway. Some are long-term projects, others are quick fixes that move on to new homes. Each one has its own story, and each teaches me something new.

The idea is simple: cars are more than just transportation. They’re projects, puzzles, and companions. Fix Up Fleet is about sharing that process — the good, the bad, and the occasionally ridiculous — in a way that’s honest and useful.

What You’ll Find Here

My goal is to combine my love of writing, my web skills, and my evolving fleet into something worth following. On Fix Up Fleet, you’ll see:
Repair and maintenance write-ups that show what really works (and what doesn’t).
Tool and part reviews from someone who actually uses the stuff in a small shop.
Fleet updates so you can follow along as projects evolve.
Personal stories — reflections and experiences that may not drive SEO traffic, but matter deeply to me and show the “why” behind Fix Up Fleet.
Ideas and lessons learned about keeping cars on the road without going broke.

This isn’t about building show cars or chasing Instagram likes. It’s about practical projects, honest fixes, and the satisfaction of keeping vehicles alive.

Why Now?

Like a lot of people, Covid shifted my perspective. Add in the birth of my son, and suddenly my spare time in the shop meant more than just turning wrenches — it became a way to unwind, to create, and to share something real. I realized there weren’t enough “regular people” out there documenting what it’s actually like to keep cars going, especially outside of social media. That’s what I want Fix Up Fleet to be: a straightforward, down-to-earth corner of the Internet.

Thanks for Stopping By

I live in the Pacific Northwest with my wife, son, and two rescue dogs. When I’m not working on a computer, you’ll usually find me in the shop with a wrench in hand.

Thanks for checking out Fix Up Fleet. If you want to see the current lineup, head over to the Fleet page. Stick around — there’s always another project in the works.

Let’s fix up some cars.

Heads up: a few links here may be affiliate links. Using them supports Fix Up Fleet without costing you extra — and lets me buy the next batch of parts for new projects.
